The Contemporary Wayang Archive

The Contemporary Wayang Archive (CWA) is a collection of re-elaborations of Java's oldest performance tradition: wayang kulit. This archive includes performance data, translations, and notes by the editors and translators of how the performances were received in their original context.

The CWA is part of the Asian Intercultural Digital Archives (AIDA). It was developed as part of two projects funded by the Singapore Ministry of Education at the National University of Singapore: Relocating Intercultural Theatre (MOE2008-T2-1-110) and Digital Archiving and Intercultural Performance (MOE2013-t2-1-011). The CWA is a joint initiative with the Indonesian Visual Arts Archive (IVAA).

Features

Search. You can search for any word in the subtitles, either in the original languages (Javanese and Indonesian) or in English. The results will show all the matching time-points where the word is used in the performances.
Tags. By clicking on the different tags you can select performances according to the kind of music, language, story or space used in the performance.

Translation

Honorifics. The translations aim for simplicity in order to allow users to easily follow the performance videos. However, the honorifics in the original languages were retained in the subtitles. In Javanese and Indonesian, speakers address their interlocutors with over 40 different honorifics which denote differences in their relative status and level of intimacy.
Notes. Word play, cultural and historical allusions, and ambiguous expressions are explained in the notes. A number in brackets [ ] in the subtitles refers to the note number that can be found in the note box next to the video player.
